rappid by imd BIOTECH
rappid is a biosensor technology platform that enables food manufacturers and food safety laboratories to detect live pathogens faster using compact hardware and real-time software. I led the design of the MVP in 2025, transforming complex biotech workflows into an intuitive product for early pilot customers.

Problem
Traditional food safety testing can take up to 72 hours, delaying critical decisions and increasing the risk of health issues, product recalls and compliance issues. Quality managers worldwide expressed their need to get actionable results much sooner. That's where rappid steps in by measuring bacterial growth in real-time, enabling faster, data-backed decisions without compromising accuracy.
Goal
The primary goals were to deliver test results in under 24 hours, reduce the complexity of the workflow significantly, and ensure that test data is traceable. Success was defined by delivering a fully functional, easy to use MVP that could be validated by real users under lab conditions.
Scope
I worked as the Lead Product Designer in a small, agile team alongside another designer, developers, and biotech engineers. I conducted user research in a real laboratory environment, mapped user flows for onboarding and test execution, designed wireframes, created UI prototypes in Figma, and managed handoff and QA.
I also created the logo for rappid in the style of the existing imd BIOTECH branding and redesigned the company's website to better reflect their positioning as a modern food safety innovator.
Insights
In our research, we learned that lab teams value one thing above all: simplicity. They want fast, easy setup, less manual work, and a system that helps them share results quickly, while minimizing the risk of errors.
Solution
The MVP combines a well-designed, innovative hardware and an easy-to-use software to create a streamlined pathogen testing experience. Biosensors detect live pathogens, while a compact analyzer automates the process with lab-grade precision. The software provides real-time results. In terms of design, we prioritized clarity over complexity, broke the experience into step-by-step flows, and used a status-based dashboard to make results easy to interpret at a glance.
Result
Pilot customers are already using the first prototypes, and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, particularly regarding how simple the system is to use.
Reflection
Designing for rappid showed me how impactful UX can be in real-world, high-precision environments like biotech labs. Observing lab staff underscored how much clarity and usability matter when every detail counts.
